Drones provide an option to piloted helicopters

Utility companies are turning more often to drones to inspect the miles of high-strung wires spanning their territories, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Drones provide an option to piloted helicopters or ground-based visual inspections. Plus, drones offer autonomous navigation, according to the report.

Phoenix Air Unmanned is targeting this new application, according to the report, and is looking to obtain approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to use its 7-foot long rotorcraft for such inspections. The drones would carry two cameras and a LIDAR sensor.
