Hartford Business Journal reports that construction firms are experimenting with wearable technology and the internet of things (IoT) to enhance workplace safety. These devices range from trackable clips that can detect falls, to bionic exoskeletons that assist with heavy lifting.
The article reports that firms like Gilbane are leading some of the newest technology. Gilbane, in a partnership with Triax Technologies, has developed a wearable device called the Spot-r Clip. The device attaches to a worker’s waist belt and monitors their location on a job site. This helps to detect common construction accidents, like falls.
Other wearables like exoskeletons or lumbar monitors aim to prevent fatigue, pain, and soft-tissue injuries. O&G Construction recently piloted an exoskeleton technology, the Ekso Zero G, to chip concrete on a bridge replacement project. The mechanical arm can bear the weight of a 30-pound power tool.
