GREENFIELD — A Westfield man was killed Friday morning after authorities said they believe he fell into a silo at a concrete mixing plant. He was 66. Western Mass News, above, identified the man as Matthew Nedorostek.

Chicopee Concrete Service uses the site on Cleveland Street as a place to mix dry ingredients. Coworkers said the man had climbed to the top of a tower Friday morning. The call for help went out after they realized he was not responding to calls over the radio and he was missing, the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office said Friday evening.

It prompted a massive response that included Greenfield Police and firefighters; South Deerfield Fire personnel; detectives with the State Police Unit attached to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office; members of the Western Massachusetts Technical Rescue Team and a special operations team from the state’s Department of Fire Services.

Those involved in the response also included Greenfield Department of Public Works, LIFE STAR, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and firefighters from Turners Falls, Erving and Deerfield.

Rescue crews arrived at about 8:45 a.m. and by mid-morning, Greenfield Fire Department was calling it a “recovery” and not a rescue.

The worker’s body was recovered around 4:30 p.m., according to the district attorney’s office.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.

OSHA, the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, opened an investigation into an incident, according to spokesperson Erika Ruthman.
