WSDOT produced a video detailing the demolition of Seattle’s Alaskan Way Viaduct, beginning with phase one of taking the viaduct down, and closing with the project’s wrap up. After beginning demolition in February 2019, the crew has finally brought down the final section of the double-deck highway. WSDOT writes that the video captures “the meticulous work of demolishing an urban highway and transforming an iconic waterfront.”
Demolishing a major highway next to buildings, people, and traffic made the demolition unique and complex, while still aiming to accommodate commuters and prevent slowing down traffic. The video also offers a view of the new waterfront following demolition, offering a clearer view of the skyline and additional street-level landmarks.
