Hyundai HL900 Series Wheel Loaders Updated with Tier 4

Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas’ new HL900 Series wheel loaders use Tier 4-Final engines and, according to Hyundai, can deliver as much as 10 percent lower fuel consumption 5 and percent greater productivity, compared with previous 9A Series loaders. The first models available include the HL940, HL955, HL960, HL970, and HL980. Fourth quarter 2015 will bring the HL935, as well Extended Reach (XT) models and a special Tool Master (TM) configuration that provides parallel lift.

A new cab, larger than that for previous models, provides added floor space, improved visibility, and easier access, says Hyundai. In-cab sound levels are reduced by 3 dB(A), and cab amenities include an interactive touch-screen monitor, optional finger-tip controls, heated air-ride seat, and improved climate-control system. An optional Smart Start ignition system for password- or Bluetooth key-enabled starting is also available.

Technical details

Cummins engines power the smaller HL935, HL940, HL955, and HL960 models, while the HL970 and HL980 use Scania engines. Both engines achieve Tier 4-Final emissions compliance through a combination of selective catalytic reduction and a diesel oxidation catalyst.

Gains in fuel economy result, says the company, from such features as Hyundai’s Eco Pedal, programmable auto-engine shutdown (available with the Smart Start option), Eco Gauge, and available lock-up-clutch transmission. According to Hyundai, the Eco Pedal automatically detects foot pressure and adjusts power modes according to job demands, and the Eco Gauge provides a graphic reference for fuel efficiency and for total/ average fuel use.

Machines can be equipped with a standard ZF four-speed or optional ZF five-speed automatic transmission, the latter with a lockup clutch. Front- and rear-axle coolers are available for select larger models, and for the HL955 and larger models, a front locking differential. Buckets are newly designed, having a deeper profile, curved side plates, and a larger spill guard to enhance bucket fill and material retention. And to boost loading efficiency and track production, an automatic weighing system is also available.

Safety and serviceability

Safety features, says Hyundai, include large access steps to the cab, convenient grab handles, engine-compartment guardrails, and larger cab doors. Additional features include a speed-limit setting (programmable through the touch-screen monitor) and a rearview-camera system with higher resolution and enhanced night visibility.

Serviceability features include a new tilt-back, wide-opening engine cowl that simplifies access to the engine and to the new vertically stacked coolers. Brake discs are made from sintered material to improve overall braking effectiveness and to extend service life.

Pressures, operating settings, and detailed service-related information are accessible through the monitor, which can be used to program cushioned stops for boom and bucket cylinders. Easy-to-reach, centralized lubrication is designed to reduce service time, and the drive-line center bearing is sealed and supported for long service life and reduced maintenance.

The new Hyundai models are delivered with a three-year subscription to the company’s Hi-Mate telematics system, a standard three-year/3,000-hour warranty, and a five-year/10,000-hour structural warranty.
