Terex refers to the latest version of its TL120 compact wheel loader as “the large compact,” likely because the articulated-steering model weighs in at 16,653 pounds and develops 101 net horsepower from its Tier 4-Interim Deutz TCD3.6 L4 engine, providing the TL120 with 16 percent more power than its predecessor. The new hydrostatic-drive loader, with bucket choices ranging from 1.57 to 2.35 cubic yards, features the Terex Parallel Kinematics loader linkage, new Smart Control operator interface, cooling-system enhancements, and a convenient two-door cab with lowered interior sound levels.
The Parallel Kinematics loader linkage, says Terex, provides “synchronized parallel operation over the entire lifting height,” allowing the operator “to quickly and precisely lift loads to height without constant readjustment of the load angle.” The TL120 uses a mechanical quick-attach coupler (hydraulic operation is optional), and the coupler is designed, says the company, to provide an enhanced field of vision when forks are attached. An available extended-lifting frame provides a significant dump-height increase.
In the TL120’s cab, the new Terex Smart Control system allows the operator to configure the machine to best suit the application, says the company, using “intuitive” menu guides similar to those on a smart phone. A new dash is intended to provide improved at-a-glance machine-operating information, and cab refinements have reduced interior sound levels from 76 to 71 dB(A), a significant drop. In addition, says Terex, end-of-stroke cushioning of steering cylinders adds to operator comfort.
The TL120’s variable-flow implement-hydraulic system has multi-function capability and operates independently of the machine’s hydrostatic drive system. The machine uses a multi-function joystick controller that also provides control of auxiliary hydraulics. A “brake inch” pedal allows the operator to divert engine power from the propel system to the hydraulic system in order to speed cycle times.
Overall power-train efficiency is enhanced by the TL120’s new, hydraulically driven, on-demand cooling fan, having an available reversing function to facilitate cleaning. The new fan, says Terex, in conjunction with a new hood design, contributes to the TL120’s reduced bystander sound level, from 102 to 99 dB(A).
The TL120 also features an oscillating rear axle and automatic limited-slip differentials front and rear. Options include ride control, two-speed travel, automatic bucket-return system, creep-speed system, air conditioning, central lubrication system, and numerous attachments, including side-dump and multipurpose buckets, sweeper, snow blade and material-handling arm.
