I-840 Lane Closed by Excavator Mishap

April 19, 2024
A railway-mounted Cat excavator hit the bridge.

Interstate 840 will be partially closed south of Franklin, Tennessee, after a Caterpillar excavator operating on railroad tracks hit a bridge, damaging several support beams. The bridge carried eastbound lanes I-840, and a single lane will be closed for about three months as the bridge is repaired, according to the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

The incident occurred at mile marker 28 where a CSX crew was working on the railroad below the bridge. An inspection of the bridge determined that the untouched portion was safe to cross, but the right lane would be closed for repairs. Bell and Associates Construction will do the work, according to TDOT.

The crawler excavator was mounted an undercarriage allowing it to travel on the rails. A logo on the machine identified the supplier as Ballast Tools Equipment, a railroad equipment supplier.
