Next-generation Extendo 944X telehandler builds on the design of predecessor models with several new engineering enhancements, including a newly design boom that provides a maximum lift capacity of 9,000 pounds, maximum forward reach of 30 feet, and maximum lift height of 44.5 feet. Featuring formed boom plates, the boom structure is designed to both increase strength and reduce weight, while also minimizing deflection for better control and accuracy when placing loads.
Boom overlap has been nearly doubled from previous models, resulting in smoother operation and reduced contact forces on the new fastener-less wear pads, says Pettibone, thereby extending service life. A bottom-mounted, external, extend cylinder also is used to further reduce load on wear pads—by up to 50-percent, says the company, and the cylinder’s location also allows greater service access to internal boom components. A single extension chain eliminates the need to balance dual chains.
The Extendo 944X uses a 74-horsepower Cummins QSF 3.8 Tier 4-F diesel engine equipped with diesel-oxidation-catalyst muffler and requires no diesel exhaust fluid. A 117-horsepower option is also available. The side-pod-mounted engine allows ready access for routine service, and the engine housing is designed to provide enhanced curbside visibility and improved ground clearance (18 inches).
The Extendo 944X’s hydraulics system is designed to deliver controllability and overall operating feel, says the company, while enhancing efficiency and cycle speeds. Cylinder cushioning is used to dampen end-of-stroke shock, both when extending and retracting. Use of a single lift cylinder is designed to improve operator sight lines, and twin non-tensioned hydraulic lines are used for tilt and auxiliary plumbing.
The drive train uses a 3F/3R Dana VDT12000 power-shift transmission and axles that have been “optimized” to provide tractive effort with minimal tradeoff on top-end speed, says Pettibone. The new model has full-time 4-wheel-drive with limited-slip front-axle differential. Turning radius is 14 feet 1 inch.
The Extendo operator ‘s cab, says the company, maintains Pettibone’s ergonomic seat, pedal, joystick, and steering wheel positions, while “optimizing lines of sight in all directions.” A new analog/LCD gauge cluster is standard; optional is a 7-inch digital display with integrated back-up camera. The cab features enhanced climate control; flat, bolt-in glass; split-door design; opening rear window; USB accessory plug; lockable storage under the seat; and water-resistant components that withstand interior wash down.
The fuel and hydraulic tanks are fabricated of steel, and the 30-gallon fuel tank is sized for a typical, full day’s work. Other features include non-tensioned boom hoses, split-system electrical circuit panels, 12-volt accessory plug in the engine bay, and heavy-duty LED lighting. Options include a sling hook for additional load security and a wide variety of attachments.
