Genie has introduced its 6,000-pound-capacity GTH-636 telehandler, a compact-sized machine designed to perform like a larger unit.
Rather than detuning its 8,000-pound-capacity GTH-844 telehandler by downsizing the cylinders, Genie engineers decided to optimize the structure in the boom and the chassis for a completely new compact machine, dropping the operating weight to under 20,000 pounds.
By staying under 20,000 pounds, the GTH-636 can deliver full-sized performance and full-sized lift capacity on full-sized tires at the price of a smaller unit, says Chad Hislop, director of product management, Terex Aerial Work Platforms.
The telehandler was also able to spec out at 74 horsepower, meaning it could be powered by a 2.9L Tier 4-Final compliant Deutz turbocharged diesel engine with a DOC that requires no scheduled service.
Had Genie used an engine with an output 75 horsepower or over, it would have needed a DPF for aftertreatment, and regeneration technology.
Like the GTH-844, the compact GTH-636 features a side engine mount, a high-pivot boom, and a high-visibility cab, but the similarities stop there, according to Hislop. He stresses this is an all-new machine.
“With the GTH-636, we took the best features of our 8,000-pound telehandler and then created a whole new equation. We focused on maximizing customer ROIC,” Hislop says.
The GTH-636 has a maximum lifting height of 36 feet and a forward reach of 21 feet 11 inches. It weighs in at 17,600 pounds. The outside turning radius of 13 feet 4 inches.
As with all Genie telehandlers, the GTH-636 comes standard with the company’s Quick-Attach (QA) system. It also has auxiliary hydraulics, a right-side mount engine and a new boom support for enhanced visibility.
The QA system gives the operator the flexibility to use the forks and carriage that come with the machine, or quickly attach to a new carriage. A new feature on the QA system is a new lifting shackle. The new lifting point can support a full-rated suspended load of 6,000 pounds without the need for an additional attachment.
The GTH-636 also has the latest generation Genie telehandler cab, launched in 2013. Cab options include fully enclosed, and fully enclosed with air conditioning. An adjustable suspension seat and adjustable tilt steering wheel are standard.
“We built this cab around the operator,” Hislop says. “An operator anywhere from 5 feet 4 inches to 6 feet 10 inches can fit comfortably.”
The compact telehandler’s boom can be serviced by removing one cover, a common feature with all Genie telehandlers. This lets the service technician remove all the boom cylinders and chains without having to take the boom apart.
“Genie has built its reputation on products that are easy to maintain and service,” says Hislop. “Regular maintenance is easier, and that keeps the equipment working.”
