Volvo VNX Heavy Truck Test Set

Truck editor Tom Berg took a Volvo VNX-300 for a test drive, and it was specified with the following:

Truck: 2018 Volvo VNX-300 non-sleeper conventional-cab 8x4 heavy-haul tractor, w/ 11.81x4.13x0.44-inch straight steel rails, high-mount suspensions, pusher-type lift axle, headboard and hydraulic wet kit; GVW 86,000 lb.

Engine: Volvo D13, 4-cycle, inline 6-cylinder diesel, 12.8 liters (780 cubic inches), EPA 2017 exhaust certification, 500 hp @ 1,350 to 1,800 rpm; 1,850 lb.-ft. @ 1,100 to 1,400 rpm

Transmission: Volvo I-Shift 14-speed automated manual

Front axle: 20,000-lb. Volvo VF20 on 20,000-lb. multileafs, w/ Volvo-Bendix air disc brakes

Lift axle: 20,000-lb. Hendrickson Composilite w/ Meritor Q+ drum brakes

Rear axle: 46,000-lb. Meritor 46-164EH w/ 3.73 ratio, on 46,000-lb. Hendrickson PriMaxx air suspension, w/ Volvo air disc brakes

Wheelbase: 266 in.

Front & lift-axle tires: 445/65R22.5 Michelin XZY3

Rear tires: 11R24.5 Michelin XDS2

Wheels: Alcoa polished aluminum discs

Fuel tanks: Polished aluminum, 100 gal. left, 120 gal. right (split 60-40 fuel-hydraulic fluid)
