A Chat with 2021 Fleet Masters Award Winner Superior Construction

Ernie Stephens, CEM, and Brian Connolly, CEM, of Superior Construction are no strangers to awards. Both are former Under 40 in Construction Equipment Award winners.

Superior Construction, based in Portage, Indiana, recently won the 2021 Construction Equipment/AEMP Fleet Masters Award for small fleets (ERV of $100 million or under).

Construction Equipment's Frank Raczon sat down with Stephens and Connolly to gain some insight into their jobs, what they would tell other up-and-coming equipment managers, and how the pandemic has changed the way they manage.

Superior is in the midst of a massive $300-million-dollar Interstate project in Indianapolis, involving reconstruction of more than 50 bridges, multiple lane changes and closures, and more. It's at the junction of I-65 and I-70 in the heart of the city. You'll find rollers, dozers, loaders, excavators, compact track loaders, multiple cranes, trucks, and a myriad of support equipment. Especially impressive is how the company has worked with its vendors to anticipate needs on this and other projects.

Look for a feature story on Superior in the July issue of Construction Equipment.
