Top 100: Clean Diesels Preview ACERT

Sept. 28, 2010

Wondering what Caterpillar means by ACERT (Advanced Combustion Emissions Reduction Technology)? Check out today's Clean Diesel C10, C12 and C15 engines. Cat calls them a preview of the technology they're relying on to avoid exhaust-gas recirculation. Key ACERT features on the 10.3-, 12-, and 14.6-liter engines include a larger version of the exhaust catalyst proven on Cat's mid-range engines and electronic control for the waste-gate turbocharger. A fuel-management system stabilizes fuel temperature and compensates for power lost to hot fuel. Injection software changes are in place, as are injectors that deliver a pilot injection before the primary fuel charge enters the cylinder.
