A pedestrian was fatally struck by a dump truck in the Parnassus Heights neighborhood of San Francisco on Tuesday morning, officials said.
At about 8:44 a.m., city police responded to the intersection of Parnassus Avenue and Stanyan Street after a report of a vehicle collision with a pedestrian, according to a San Francisco police spokesperson. There, officers located an adult male suffering from injuries.
Despite lifesaving efforts by police and responding medics, the man, whose identity was not immediately released, was declared deceased at the scene.
San Francisco Fire Department spokesperson Mariano Elias said the victim had been struck by a dump truck, but he could not immediately confirm whether the vehicle was private or operating on behalf of the city.
Police said the driver remained on the scene and that drug and alcohol impairment did not appear to be a factor in the collision. There were no arrests by late Tuesday morning.
Walk San Francisco, a pedestrian advocacy group, said Tuesday’s collision marked the city’s 20th pedestrian fatality so far this year; up from 18 in all of 2023.
“Our hearts are broken for the man who died this morning simply crossing the street,” said the group’s executive director, Jodie Medeiros. “We are holding his loved ones in our thoughts, and know the entire neighborhood shares in our grief and concern.”
Walk SF and Families for Safe Streets planned to hold a vigil at the crash location Tuesday at 5 p.m.
