One person is dead and another is severely injured after a car crashed into a parked excavator on the eastbound lanes of State Route 78 near El Camino Real in Oceanside, California, according to published reports.
According to a report from Fox 5 News, authorities responded to the crash where they say a small car crashed into the large excavator that was parked near the shoulder. Both occupants of the vehicle were trapped inside following the crash.
Authorities were able to extract the trapped driver from the vehicle, who was then transported by air ambulance to a nearby trauma center, according to the report. It took first responders 30 minutes with specialized equipment to free the passenger due to challenging circumstances. Once they were freed, they were taken to a nearby trauma center, but authorities said they went into traumatic cardiac arrest in the ambulance.
It is unclear at this time whether it was the passenger or the driver who succumbed to their injuries. The identities of the two have not been disclosed.
The cause of the accident is currently under investigation by California Highway Patrol.
