One person was killed when a tower crane collapsed onto a downtown Dallas apartment building on Sunday afternoon as severe storms hit the area. Five people were also taken to local hospitals, with two people in critical condition, two seriously injured, and one with a minor injury.
CBS reported that Jason Evans, a fire rescue spokesman, told the Associated Press that first responders had searched accessible apartments and found no one inside. He also said residents living in apartments impacted by the crane were either out at the time, or among those hospitalized.
The collapse came as strong weather and storms hit the Dallas metropolitan area. According to CBS, the National Weather Service said the region spanning Texas Hill Country and Dallas Fort Worth was experiencing severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes.
CBS and Dallas residents captured the collapse and its aftermath, posting videos and images on Twitter.
