UPS and trucking startup TuSimple have begun hauling cargo in self-driving Navistar trucks between Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona, as part of a new partnership between the two companies. According to The Verge, TuSimple had previously run a partnership with the U.S. Postal Service in May, where the startup’s trucks carried mail on the 1,000 mile stretch between the USPS’s Phoenix, Arizona, and Dallas, Texas distribution centers.
The trucks use TuSimple’s own self-driving technology, which The Verge reports, sees the world through nine cameras. The startup is focused on developing a vision-based autonomous system, similar to what Tesla uses in its cars. The vehicles still use a safety driver and an engineer on board who monitor the system, like many other self-driving pilot programs in the U.S.
