    AEMP Creates Carbon Intensity Metric

    The Association of Equipment Management Professionals has defined a carbon intensity metric to measure the amount of carbon dioxide emissions produced per unit of activity or output. The group released the metric during its Sustainability Summit in June.

    “After gaining valuable feedback from a diverse group of equipment managers, we’ve agreed upon a Carbon Intensity Metric that the industry can use to measure the carbon footprint of an equipment fleet,” said Cody Meeker, CEM, global fleet manager at Bechtel and a member of AEMP’s sustainability task force. “Our next steps are to provide guidance and resources to those looking to calculate, track, and reduce the impact of the largest fleets in the world. What we accomplished is something to be proud of.”

    AEMP defines the metric (CIM) as pounds of carbon dioxide emitted divided by machine hours, which is a machine data point included in the ISO 15143-3 telematics standard. CIM defines emissions as fuel consumption times an “emissions factor.” Diesel, for example, has an emission factor of 22.38 pounds of carbon dioxide per gallon, according to AEMP.

    The group suggests CIM can be used over time to track and measure carbon intensity. It suggests a tracking template to establish a baseline and track progress toward carbon-reduction goals.
