Wirtgen Emphasizes Technology at World of Asphalt

The company illustrated its efforts to support road building's transition to technology.

Road building equipment is “transitioning beyond iron to technology,” according to Matt Graves, director of marketing communications for Wirtgen. He made the comment during the manufacturer’s media event at World of Asphalt. Graves then led journalists through a series of product updates, emphasizing new technologies on various Wirtgen products.

Hamm Smart Compact Pro

Wirtgen’s Hamm lineup ratcheted up its Intelligent Compaction offering with Smart Compact Pro, integrating real-time density measurement into its automated compaction process.

Smart Compact Pro includes a “Realtime Density Scan” sensor that determines the asphalt density in real time by measuring the dielectric conductivity of the asphalt mix to be compacted, forming the basis for the correlation with the asphalt density or the void content. The company said use of the system could eliminate the need for destructive coring samples often required to validate density parameters.

Wirtgen W 210 XF Milling Machine

The Wirtgen Group Performance Tracker Milling (WPT Milling) automatically documents milling tasks. The milling machine operator can view the automated construction site documentation and display the CO₂ emissions for the entire construction site at a glance and in real time on the machine’s control panel. Graves said the system not only charts how much has been milled, but it also provides an accurate estimate for the amount of new asphalt needed to finish the road.

The W 210 XF mills widths between 6 feet 7 inches and 8 feet 2 inches to a maximum milling depth of 13 inches. It has a new John Deere Power Systems diesel that provides 777 horsepower and does not require diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). The new engine consumes less fuel and is quieter than the previous powerplant.

Mobirex MR 100 NEO Crusher

This mobile impact crusher has fully automatic crusher gap adjustment and zero-point determination. The Kleemann crusher can be operated from the Spective Switch control unit. With Spective Connect, operators have the ability to access all relevant data such as engine speeds, consumption values, and filling levels via a clearly laid-out display on a smartphone or tablet.
