Maxwell Technologies now offers its new ultra-capacitor-based Engine Start Module (ESM Ultra 31/900) for Class 3-6 medium-duty trucks, complementing ESM models already available for Class 7-8 heavy trucks.
The new ESM’s no-acid, lead-free ultra-capacitor replaces one of the truck’s existing Group 31 batteries and takes over engine-starting chores. As long as the conventional batteries maintain a charge of 9.5 volts to activate the truck’s fuel pump, fuel injectors, and ECM, the ESM provides a powerful burst of starting energy, says the company, delivering 900 cold-cranking amps for starting diesel engines up to 9.9 liters at temperatures between -40 F and 149 F.
