Komatsu 980E-4 Electric-Drive Haul Truck

Sept. 16, 2016

The 980E-4 rigid-frame haul truck is a new model. It has a capacity of 400 tons and is powered by a 3,500-horsepower Komatsu SSDA18V170 diesel engine. It matches to bucket shovels with capacities from 55 to 99 cubic yards.

The AC electric drive system, manufactured by GE Transportation Systems, has an alternator designed with a dual impeller inline blower for cooling, and a high-capacity retarding package for extended brake life and horsepower for downhill descents. Retardation force of 6,000 horsepower allows the unit to maintain constant downhill speed or decelerate without frequent use of brakes.

An Invertex II drive system uses the latest AC technology, the company says. The GDY108C traction motor was designed specifically for this unit, and the DTA-39 traction alternator is used in the 930E-4SE and 960E-2 trucks.
