‘Proud Mary’ TBM Arrives in Portsmouth

A tunnel boring machine arrived at the site of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion Project and has been dubbed “Proud Mary” by a group of students, according to a report in The Virginian-Pilot.

According to the report, the students sought to honor Mary Winston Jackson, who haled from Hampton, Virginia, and was an aerospace engineer of “Hidden Figures” fame.

The tunnel boring machine was made in Germany and will tunnel two-lane tunnels under the Hampton Roads harbor. The machine will be assembled with the target of commencing boring in mid-2022.
