The Wall Street Journal reports that a federal appeals court allowed the Trump administration to move forward with plans to use $3.7 billion in military construction money to build the Mexico border wall.
According to the article, the $3.7 billion in U.S. Defense Department funds comprises a “significant chunk of the money the Trump administration had intended to put toward border-wall construction this year.” The goal was to build about 500 miles of the wall by the end of 2020.
In December, a federal-district court in El Paso, Texas, blocked the administration from moving the money, the Wall Street Journal reports. This funding had been “earmarked” for 127 domestic and foreign military construction products. Without the funding, the administration likely wouldn’t meet its construction goals.
“The Fifth Circuit’s order allowing the Trump administration to proceed came in a brief 2-1 decision, with appointees of Presidents Reagan and Trump in the majority, and an Obama appointee in dissent. The order wasn’t a final ruling on the merits of the case, but gives the administration a green light for now,” the Wall Street Journal reported.
