Earthmoving machines move soil and other material, usually on a heavy construction site in preparation for further building. Machines move on wheels, steel tracks, or rubber tracks, depending on the application. Compact earthmovers perform similar tasks on smaller construction projects.
Common projects include site preparation, mining and aggregate quarries, and road building.
Each type of earthmoving machine performs a different function on a project. Excavators dig trenches and—as the name implies—can excavate large quantities of dirt. They are often paired with haul trucks such as articulated dump trucks (ADT). Wheel loaders dig and then load or carry various types of material. Dozer (bulldozers) have blades that grade a job site by cutting and pushing dirt to form a slope. Motor graders perform similar operations.
