Replacing the 980G Series II, the new 980H wheel loader offers some exciting enhancements that are said to improve productivity, operator comfort and serviceability. The new unit also retains proven features such as Command Control Steering, Ride Control and Engine Idle Management System.
Like many of Caterpillar's machines, the 980H has been upgraded with a Tier 3-compliant engine. The Cat C15 engine features ACERT technology, which provides advanced electronic control, precision fuel delivery, and refined air management for outstanding engine performance, according to Cat. The six-cylinder engine has 15.2 liters displacement and produces 318 net horsepower. It features mechanically actuated electronic fuel injection (MEUI) and uses the A4:E4V2 controller, which continuously adjusts engine output depending on jobsite conditions.
The Next Generation Modular Radiator (NGMR) replaces the previous model's Advanced Modular Cooling System (AMOCS). NGMR cores are single-pass flow versus the two-pass flow cores used in AMOCS. For greater resistance to plugging and easier cleaning, the new system has six fins per inch, compared to nine fins per inch in the previous version.
For smoother transmission shifts, including directional changes, the machine is equipped with Electronic Clutch Pressure Control (ECPC). That technology modulates individual transmission valves via the MAC14 electronic control module for precise control of pressure and time, according to Caterpillar. Benefits include longer component life, enhanced operator comfort, and easier serviceability.
Key changes to the hood-lift system, rear fenders and maintenance points also make servicing easier. The new electro-hydraulic actuation system tilts the hood from closed to any position up to 70 degrees. And lift time has been cut in half to 30 seconds.
Other improvements include grouped pressure taps centrally located in a service area behind the cab, redesigned battery box and toolbox, and relocation of the air cleaner element. Plus, the rear fenders provide 180-degree coverage of each wheel—double that of the previous model.
The 980H uses the same spacious cab and controls as on the G-Series, but offers lower sound levels in the cab as well as easier access. By using additional insulation, the sound level has been significantly reduced—from 80 to 76 dB(A). Also, improved cab sealing makes for a cleaner operator environment. For easier entry, the loader features a redesigned left-side access ladder, which is built into the fuel tank. A full-length ladder comes standard on the right side of the machine.
Several factory options are also available, including a windshield-cleaning package, next-generation Product Link, and high-intensity quartz halogen work lights. The Lincoln Quick-lube Automatic Lubrication System provides precise lubrication of pins and bushings while the machine is working.
