The new PC1250-8 backhoe and PC1250LC-8 backhoe and hydraulic shovel (pictured) are designed for pit-and-quarry work and other high-production applications. Operating weights range from 234,790 to 254,000 pounds, and the hydraulic shovel has an operating weight of 244,790 pounds. Bucket capacities for the backhoe range from 4.4 to 8.8 cubic yards, depending on boom and arm length, material density and application conditions; the hydraulic shovel has an 8.5-cubic-yard capacity. Both models are powered by a Komatsu SAA6D170E-5 engine, which adopts the world's first cooled EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculating) system with electronically controlled bypass-assist type venturi, according to Komatsu. The engine is Tier 3 certified, reducing nitrous oxide emissions by about 40 percent. The machines also feature a new hydraulically driven variable speed cooling fan for quieter operation and improved fuel economy.
